Volunteers are the heart of the Indiana Library Federation. Members may volunteer to participate in a leadership role, including on a workgroup, Division, Advisory Board, Committee, or the ILF Board of Directors.

Minimum requirements for any leadership role include:

  • active personal membership in ILF1,
  • commitment to the ILF mission and vision,
  • active participation in scheduled meetings/activities, and
  • positive representation of ILF.

Indicate your interest in volunteering in a leadership role by completing the volunteer form (bottom of Personal Membership page)

Officers assume their new roles at the beginning of the calendar year.

Board of Directors
Elected by the membership, the Board of Directors is legally responsible for the governance and oversight of the Indiana Library Federation. A nominating committee develops a slate that includes representation from library community, with a goal to include voices from 2 academic, 2 school, 2 public, 2 trustee/supporter, 2 at-large and 6 officers, and an ALA Councilor.  Ex-officio directors include representatives from IN State Library, IN Library-Historical Bureau and the ILF executive.

Committees (and ad hoc Work Groups)
The Indiana Library Federation Board of Directors charges various committees with responsibilities related to ILF's mission, vision and goals. Primary committees include: Advocacy/Legislative, Awards, Communications, Finance, Membership/Nominations, and Professional Development. Committees make recommendations to the Board for action. ILF sometimes creates ad hoc Work Groups to explore issues and possible projects; recent workgroups include those on adult literacy and supervised child visits.

Indiana Library Federation members may select one or more special interest divisions. ILF facilitates conference calls and professional development opportunities related to the Division interests and aligned with the ILF Vision. Each Division has a Division Leadership Team of up to 12 volunteers who guide the activities and conference sessions targeted for the Divisions.

The Indiana Library Federation recognizes the four associations that merged and evolved over 126 years. ILF members typically select with a primary type of library (academic, public or school) or are supporters (Friends, Trustees, advocates), which align with the four divisions of ALA:
* IALA, Indiana Academic Library Association, the ACRL affiliate;
* IPLA, Indiana Public Library Association, the PLA affiliate;
* AISLE, Association of Indiana School Library Educators, the AASL affiliate; and
* ILTSA, Indiana Library Trustee and Supporter Association, aligned with the United for Libraries.

Each affiliation has an association advisory board, which meets 2-6 times per year to provide advice and support to the ILF Office and Board of Directors in carrying out the work of the Federation. Each advisory board provides guidance to the specific type of library or supporter.

1Friends and Trustees have special types of memberships provided by their Library Institution or Friends Organization.
