Welcome to the Indiana Library Federation!

Our mission is to lead, educate and advocate to advance library services for the benefit of Indiana residents.

The Indiana Library Federation (ILF) is a statewide member organization represent all library types: academic, public, school, special and library supporters. It is the largest organization of its kind in Indiana, boasting more than 2,000 personal, institutional, and library trustee members. ILF is also fortunate to have affiliate (business) contributing members who support the organization's work.

The Indiana Library Federation is devoted to fostering the professional growth of its members and the promotion of all libraries in Indiana. It accomplishes its goals through statewide continuing education, public awareness, and library advocacy. The organization works to create a strong sense of unity within the library community. ILF offers members a number of opportunities for library leadership, professional growth, networking, and recognition.

The Federation is governed by the ILF Board which is elected by the membership. The board is responsible for establishing direction, goals, and policies for the organization.

The Indiana Library Federation Board of Directors charges various committees with responsibilities related to ILF's mission, vision, and goals. Primary committees include: Advocacy/Legislative, Awards, Communications, Finance, Membership/Nominations, and Professional Development. Committees make recommendations to the Board for action. ILF sometimes creates ad hoc Work Groups to explore issues and possible projects; recent workgroups include those on adult literacy and supervised child visits.

The Indiana Library Federation recognizes the four associations that merged and evolved over 126 years, which align with four divisions of American Library Association (ALA):

  • IALA, Indiana Academic Library Association, the ACRL affiliate;
  • IPLA, Indiana Public Library Association, the PLA affiliate;
  • AISLE, Association of Indiana School Library Educators, the AASL affiliate; and
  • ILTSA, Indiana Library Trustee and Supporter Association, aligned with United for Libraries.

ILF members identify their primary and secondary roles in libraries, as ILF members may serve in multiple roles (i.e. a school librarian who is also a public library trustee, or a retired academic librarian who is also a Friend). ILF members may participate in activities across affiliations, as increased cross-sector collaboration is a priority for ILF.

Indiana Library Federation members may select one or more special interest divisions. ILF facilitates conference calls and professional development opportunities related to the Division interests and aligned with the ILF Vision. Each Division has a Division Leadership Team of up to 12 volunteers who guide the activities and conference sessions targeted for the Divisions.
